Landscape Designs

When a customers asked me to quote a job I always ask what type of garden they are looking for.

Their answer to me is always low to no maintenance. Being a landscaper we all know that this never the case. Having a garden can be very rewarding if maintained.  You will always get unwanted plants “weeds” growing in the garden. The soil needs to cultivated every spring and new soil is essential.  Regular deadheading and weeding is necessary.

When I first look at a job I take into consideration the scale of the house as well as its exposer. I always look around at the neighbours making sure not to use the same variety of plants and trees. The garden should have its own penance on the block. I always like the element of surprise in a garden which makes that distinction from everyone else. I think it is important to understand your customers wishes and expectations. For me planning a garden is like a painting a canvas. I plan out what I want to do but as a project moves along creativity takes over. The layout of a garden is very important. Planting should consist of trees and shrubs and then the perennials. I make sure that there is a good mix of evergreens, deciduous trees and perennials to create a good flow in the garden.

Perennials & Annuals

I do recommend that annuals are placed around perennials or as a border. This will give the garden a cohesive aesthetic look.

Most perennials will last through the winter, but it does happen that some may not survive. As perennials grow you may notice the size increasing and causing over crowding. You may want to divide the plant or remove it to make space. It is essential to know what perennials bloom and at what time.

Having constant blooms in your garden from spring to fall plays a big role in where the plants are placed. This is what keeps a garden looking fresh from season to season.
