When to Plant
Always wait till it is safe to plant your annuals. Usually, after the Victoria Day weekend. Check to make sure there is no frost in the forecast.
How and Why
We all love to have flowering tropical and annuals at our doorstep. There is nothing more inviting than a beautiful arrangement as you and guest approach your home.
When planting yourself or with a professional make sure the planters have drainage. The pot should have a layer of landscape cloth inside so that the soil does not wash away. Prior to planting make sure your soil is clean of any old roots and drainage is achieved.
Pots without drainage can cause root rot which will cause death. Planters should be free of any excess water. If you have a saucer under planter make sure they are clear of any excess water. Before planting top up with fresh triple mix and add a slow release fertilizer like 4/12/8. Slow release fertilizer will help the plant through the season and is beneficial.
Watering and Fertilizing
When tropicals and annuals are planted make sure you water the pot well. Don't be surprised if you see some of the flowers a little wilted. Within 24 hours they will perk up. It is important to water daily when the weather is hot.
Smaller pots may need to be watered twice a day when it is very hot. It is important to watch for any signs of drought. As the plant grows the roots will go deeper in the pot allowing for the plant to get the nutrients it needs.
